Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 8: Mistletoe
Each man began his work the next day, the Lord seeking prey and Gawain attending to his tired body by enjoying a soft, warm bed.
The Lady also began her work to gain Gawain’s favor. She meant to stir trouble by rousing his passions.
First, she tiptoed up to where he lay exhausted in bed. Summoning her charms, she waited. When he grew aware of her, he moved to protect himself, bur her charms were too many.
The two began a flirtatious exchange where Gawain, overcome, pledged to be her champion, but Gawain held back from any overt displays of his passion.
As night fell, the Lady moved to depart but then accused Gawain of being unchivalrous. “If you are truly my champion, how can you let me leave without demanding a kiss?” The chaste kiss gladly given and received, both went to greet the Lord returned from the hunt. Passion bubbled within them, but it was contained for now.
The Lord presented the prize of his work to Gawain (a multitude of fine deer), and in exchange Gawain to this formidable Lord gave a fulsome kiss.
The Lord said, “Nice work. Where did you get this?” But Gawain demurred, “The source of our blessings is always a secret.” -
